Market’s in seventh heaven

Shirehampton residents and local independent traders came together last month to celebrate seven years of community trading at the Shirehampton High Street Market, in an event which also welcomed the new Lord Mayor to mark the occasion.

Initially launched in September 2019 at the Tithe Barn, the market relocated this year to the Shirehampton Methodist Church Hub and has survived several challenges affecting many such operations, including Covid and increasing costs of living.

Alongside local traders and food producers, the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Yassin Mohamud,  cut the official anniversary cake and met all those who help to run the market and make it a success.

As well as the regular artisan food stalls (including local cheeses, preserves and baked goods), this first market of September showcased three new food vendors – Food by Sophie, The Gourmet Warriors and The Tipsy Waffle.

If delicious food weren’t enough, Bristol author, Tim Kindberg, was on hand to sign copies of his latest book, Future Song, while local musician, Sarah Warren, entertained with live acoustic music.

Community support was available in the form of guidance on health and winter fuel assistance, along with details of local initiatives such as interactive craft workshops.

The Shirehampton Market is run by a management team, headed up by Ash, Katherine and Kathryn.

Reflecting on the past seven years and the desire of local residents to support independent traders, Kathryn told the Voicer: “Our markets are for the four villages and beyond, and we like to make people feel welcome no matter what part of Bristol you live in. We believe in keeping strong community ties, co-operation and helping each other out, as well as providing a good shopping and community atmosphere, which is also a safe and welcoming space.”

Shirehampton High Street Market is held on the first Thursday of every month (March to December) from 9am to 2pm at the Shirehampton Methodist Church Hub.
