Flamingo Chicks, an award-winning inclusive dance charity, is calling for new volunteers in Bristol to help bring the joy of dance to disabled children and those with illnesses such as cancer.
The charity provides disabled children/adults with the opportunity to enjoy dance and movement in a fun, accessible way. Alongside this, Flamingo Chicks also offers peer support for parents and carers, opportunities for intergenerational volunteering, global outreach, and advocacy for inclusion.
Volunteers play a vital role in making the classes a success; no dance experience is required, just a passion for supporting disabled children. Classes are short (just 45 minutes per week), led by a qualified Flamingo Chicks’ Dance Teacher and full volunteer training is provided. The charity is especially keen to hear from retired people who have an hour or more per week to spare, and are looking for a vibrant, joyful way to connect with their local community. People who can drive are also particularly welcome, as sessions run across Bristol.
Julie, a retiree from Henleaze, who has been volunteering with Flamingo Chicks for more than seven years, says: “Volunteering with Flamingo Chicks has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The children inspire me every week, and I’ve made wonderful friends along the way.”
In addition to supporting weekly classes, Flamingo Chicks is looking for volunteers who enjoy crafting and would like to use their creative skills to make props and sensory items for the children to use in classes. They also seek a volunteer to help with admin projects in the office at Downs Park East, BS6, for a few hours each week.
If you’re interested in any of the above, they’d love to hear from you. Please contact Bethan at bethan@flamingochicks.org
