For over seven years, Westbury on Trym CE Academy staff and children have worked closely with the Alzheimer’s Society to deepen understanding of dementia and explore how children and adults can support those affected. Through dedicated learning programmes, the school has raised awareness and built a culture of empathy and care.
This year, its efforts were recognised in a special way—the school was nominated for, and proudly won, The Barbara Award.
This award honours Barbara Hall, who founded Bristol Dementia Action Awareness (BDAA) with her husband Tony after her own dementia diagnosis. Barbara, a former nursery nurse, devoted her life to supporting families and children.
The Barbara Award is presented annually to a school or children’s group that has made the greatest impact in promoting awareness and supporting those living with dementia. Following a formal ceremony, the school was thrilled to welcome Tony, to an assembly, where he presented the award to all the children—recognising their commitment and compassion.
