Young singers shine on the big stage

ST John’s Primary School Singing Club have made an impressive start to 2026, following performances at two major venues.

In January, the children travelled to Birmingham Arena to take part in a glittering performance as part of the Young Voices Choir of 2026. Alongside more than 6,000 children from schools across the country, they became part of the largest children’s choir in the world, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Young Voices.

The choir sang alongside the amazing Urban Strides street dance troupe and guest artists, including Aneesa Folds (Broadway) and Connie Talbot. Preparing for such a large-scale event required dedication and commitment, with pupils learning a substantial and varied repertoire during after-school rehearsals. Favourite pieces included a lively medley of sea shanties and unbeatable songs from Wicked!

Late last year, as well as a busy programme of in-school Christmas events, the Singing Club sang at the Bristol Beacon as part of a 600-strong choir, accompanied by a professional band. The children enjoyed learning and performing a two-part repertoire, including works by renowned composers such as John Rutter, Benjamin Britten and Jonathan Dove.

The St John’s Singing Club is made up of children in Years 3 to 6, and continues to offer pupils valuable opportunities to develop their musical skills, build confidence and enjoy performing together in inspiring settings, in line with the growing recognition of the value of singing in schools.

A special thank you must go to Lindsay Churchill, St John’s music coordinator, a very talented and dedicated member of staff whose commitment plays such an important role in these experiences.
