Westbury On Trym was bathed in warm early autumn sunshine on the occasion of the annual Village Show on September 6.
This year’s theme of ‘Space’ was reflected in the names of many of the exhibit classes.
Local resident, Roger Smith, opened proceedings and presented the trophies at the end of the day. He has been a stalwart of the community for many years and has recently retired from the role of Chairman of the Westbury on Trym Allotments and Gardens Association.
Despite this year’s challenging growing conditions, there was an abundance of flowers, fruit and vegetables on display. A magnificent chilli plant, grown by Aniket Sardana, was chosen by Roger as the ‘Best in Show’. The Hall was also bright with displays of handicrafts, sewing, cookery, art and photography. All age groups were represented, and the exhibits were a testament to the talents of local people. Choosing winners was an onerous task for the judges! A huge ‘thankyou’ goes to everyone who exhibited

Entertainment by The Marshfield Brass Band and The Great Western Chorus added greatly to the traditional and festive atmosphere. In the back garden, a play area proved popular with young children and their parents. There was a wide variety of stalls, all attracting a lot of interest from visitors. Tricia and David Worthington led the catering team. Their delicious food received lots of compliments!
The Show is primarily a community event, but funds raised will be donated to the upkeep of the Village Hall. The organising committee is grateful to the many businesses and organisations in the community who supported the event by placing advertisements in the schedule or by donating prizes for the raffle, and to all the visitors, who contributed to the success of the day.
Next year’s show will take place on Saturday 5th September – remember to save the date!
